CORE Physicians Honored as Georgia Cancer Coalition Distinguished Cancer Scholars

Thomas E. Seay, MD, PhD and Frederick M. Schnell, MD, FACP were recently honored as two of 19 Distinguished Cancer Scholars named by the Georgia Cancer Coalition.
Dr. Thomas Seay is the Principal Investigator for the NCI-funded Atlanta Regional Community Oncology Program (ARCCOP) based at Saint Joseph’s Hospital of Atlanta. He currently serves as Chairman of the Georgia CORE Board of Directors and has served on the Board since its inception. Dr. Seay’s Distinguished Cancer Scholar appointment will allot $100,000 each year for five years to focus on the following: expanding clinical trials access into rural communities, facilitating activation of cooperative group and Georgia CORE sponsored clinical trials and working with colleagues at Saint Joseph’s Hospital and Georgia Tech on clinical trials that would complement the Molecular and proteomic Analysis of Pancreatic Tissue being conducted at Georgia Tech.
Dr. Frederick Schnell is a Medical Oncologist and Medical Director for the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon. He was the founding chairman of Georgia CORE and currently serves as the Chief Medical Officer. As a Distinguished Cancer Scholar, he will receive $100,000 annually for 5 years to enhance MCCG’s multidisciplinary team model to managing breast cancer care, and expand it to serve patients with colorectal, prostate and lung cancers. The plan also includes collaboration with regional physicians to assure availability of care and research protocols.
