ACS launches new cancer prevention study

The American Cancer Society has launched a new study called the Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) designed to help researchers better understand the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause or prevent cancer. The study is being conducted at Redmond Regional Medical Center in Rome, Grady Health System in Atlanta, and Georgia Health Sciences University in Augusta. The Redmond site alone has a goal of enrolling 650 participants for the study. CPS-3 is open to anyone who is 30 to 65 years old; who is willing to make a long-term commitment to the study, which involves completing periodic follow-up surveys for the next 20-30 years; and who has never been diagnosed with cancer. Those that are not eligible to participate in the study should encourage others to do so. “Any person enrolling in this study can help us find meaningful associations between lifestyle and the development of cancer,” said Dr. Walter J. Curran, Jr. executive director of the Winship Cancer Institute of Emory and board member of Georgia CORE. “Significant associations may influence our lifestyle choices, and ultimately help to prevent cancer.”
