Four Georgia hospitals to be awarded the CoC Outstanding Achievement Award

5/02/2014

Four Georgia cancer centers will receive the 2013 Commission on Cancer (CoC) Outstanding Achievement Award: Grady Memorial Hospital and Northside Hospital in Atlanta; DeKalb Medical in Decatur; and WellStar Health System, Inc. in Marietta.

“This year’s award was given to only 74 cancer programs throughout the U.S., so we are especially proud to have four of the honored hospitals here in Georgia,” said Nancy Paris, president & CEO of Georgia CORE.

Established in 2004, the CoC Outstanding Achievement Award is designed to recognize cancer programs that strive for excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients. A facility receives the award following an onsite evaluation by a physician surveyor during which the facility demonstrates a commendation level of compliance with seven standards that represent the full scope of the cancer program and receives a compliance rating for the remaining 27 standards.

The seven standards that form the basis of the award criteria are drawn from the following five areas of program activity: cancer committee leadership; cancer data management; cancer conferences; clinical management; and quality improvement.

CoC Outstanding Achievement Award recipients represent community-based facilities, academic hospitals, NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers, Veterans Administration hospitals, integrated networks, pediatric hospitals, and freestanding cancer centers.

A full list of the 2013 recipients can be found on the American College of Surgeons web site.
